Very much less than a lexus conversion.

Long time since I’ve been on here, but the time has come to start prepping my mk4 single cab for a Lexus V8 conversion. I’m lucky to have a really solid chassis and bodywork, with almost no rust at all. At present only mods are front winch and body lift by 80mm running 33”s. First thing I’m currently doing is removing the tub so I can get the chassis rubbed back and repainted and also get the tub spot on. Brand new leaf springs, shocks and bushings going on.

Once back end is spot on going to attack front shocks, cv shafts and all bushings......then it comes to removing the 2.4 engine (which fair play has done 250k and still pulls strong).

Plan is to purchase a donor car so I have all wiring/ecu etc, and rebuild engine so I know she’s good for years to come.

I have loads of questions for the lads who have done this before so please be patient.

Is this a job I could do myself (mech fitter by trade) or would it be better to get it done by a specialist engine conversion outfit? Will the standard gearbox/transfer box/diffs be man enough to cope with the extra power? If so I’d get them stripped and rebuilt also. Major doubts I have is the wiring side to this project, as a grease monkey I really don’t enjoy messing around with electrics. Realistically this project could be a long one as I work away, and only get a week home every month. Time really isn’t a issue for me though.

Ive done as much research as possible but would love to get a fresh thread going with regards to this conversion. If anyone in South Wales area got one I’d love to come and take a gander and rack your brains about it.

Ill try and get some pics of her up ASAP.

Cheers in advance.

Swampy is your man for this  Sorry swampdog on here.

Not to do it !! As he a busy working man,but If there was a niggle a tweak a....anything with the slightest rattle, rumble he would source it,seek it and fooking cure it by hook or by crook till it drives like a turn key toyota hilux with a V8 in it that toyota never did.

Plus many other on here have done the very same conversion

Now he is going to hate me for this

There's a chap called Bushwacker in South Wales too. He's done at least ten conversions. If you search here and on the surf forum you may find a couple of threads on him...

there ain't a lot i can't advise you on with a 1uz conversion......except the wiring, can't help with that i'm afraid as it's something i never did, both times i did this conversion i got someone else to do that side of things, not because i can't do it,just don't have the time, although i wish i had looked into it,as although i've had over 60k trouble free miles,it plays on my mind that i wouldn't know where to start if something did occur.

it's not actually that difficult, there's masses of info out there....infact probably too much, each time i try and research that side of things i get bound up with usless threads and contradictions

but yeah ,anything you want to know, ask away.

Hi Foxbuster,

I will probably do this when the 2.4 has had enough, or when ive had enough of feeding the thirsty bitch!

either way i guess its time i started looking for a donor car and started researching.

i found this for a start, it primarily relates to older models but does contain info regarding best most suitable transmissions.

it would be great if someone here has seen a well logged conversion and can post a link

Don't worry about transmissions. Use the auto ls400 box. Three transfer case nigh on bolts straight onto it. Remove nose cone, cut shaft to length, drill and tap one hole. Job done.

There were lots of well documented threads until photobucket decided to charge for using your own pics.

They have pretty much broke the Internet by doing this as there are millions of useless threads throughout the net now(regarding many many subjects) that are useless because none of the relevant pics can be displayed

Having done the lexus thing, if my mk6 ever fails I'll be looking for a cheap Ls1 (5.7 Chevy) 375 hp stock. 😎😎😎

So the diffs and box are man enough for the job? I’ll get them stripped and rebuilt if so. Removed the tub today, it’s in really good nick. Going to wire brush the surface rust, treat it and reapply a coating of stone guard. Once that’s done, I’ll start sprucing up the chassis but like I say it’s really good as it is. Any advice on what products to apply as stoneguard, and what’s best to use once I’ve taken surface rust off tub?

Would like to put some pics up to show the progress but ain’t got a clue how to?

And another question......are there any alternative seats that fit directly into the mk4 hilux? Heard mk1 mr2 seats go in?

If you use FB you can copy and paste the direct link   into the bottom right of your post, or use Tiny pics as a hosting site and do the same
